Lake Katherine is home to a diverse population of wildlife. More than 120 species of birds, 19 kinds of mammals, a dozen types of fish, and 17 species of reptiles and amphibians have been sighted at Lake Katherine. The diversity is proof that urban spoil sites can be redeveloped into thriving wildlife habitats.
The land adjacent to the Calumet-Sag Channel provides a great directional route for animal migration. Because Lake Katherine is on this route, it hosts a variety of animals as they pass through during the spring and fall. Some of the rarer migrants spotted at Lake Katherine include the bald eagle, the osprey, the white pelican, and the black billed magpie.
