    Homeschool Days

 

Home school days allow individual home school students to attend preselected programs. Only students of the grade-equivalent age for the programs offered will be registered.



Backbone Comparison

Grades K-5

Cost: $6
Kingdom Animalia: Phyla Chordata subphyla vertebrata. We will compare the backbone of 5 classes of animals with backbones. We will look at the backbones of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles to see how they are similar and how they are different. We will be looking at skeletons and x-rays to help with our understanding of the backbone.

Snakes

Cost: $6
Learn the characteristics of the reptile, snake. Through a variety of activities children will understand the unique movements and habits of a few of our Illinois snakes. If the parents and children are willing a snake may be held.

Muskrats

Cost: $6
Muskrats are a misunderstood mammal of lakes and streams. Children will handle muskrat pelts, skulls and tracks to better understand a muskrat’s watery habitat choice. A peek into the negative and positive aspects of their part in the natural world will also be discussed.

Turtles

Time: 1:00-2:30
Grades K-5
Program # 686
Cost: $6
Children will learn the differences between the varieties of turtles via handling live turtles as well as turtle shells. Children will also learn about the habitat needs and food requirements of several turtles.

Wetland Worders
Thursday, May 16, 2019
Time: 1:00-2:30
Grades K-5
Program # 687
Cost: $6
Using dip nets and dishes, each student will retrieve insect larvae from the water’s edge of the lake and wetland habitat, and place into petri dishes. Students will categorize the specimens they find using magnifiers and a dissecting scope. Specimens will be grouped into pollution tolerance levels as well as what type of consumer they are.

Registration and payment is required one week prior to the program date.

Organized home school groups of 10 or more age-appropriate students are encouraged to register for their own group field trip program. A designated member from your group can request programs by calling our naturalist. All registration forms from the group must be turned in (in person at the nature center or mailed in) one week prior to the date chosen.

Lake Katherine’s program refund policy is the Monday before the program-full refund. Less than 4 days, no refund.
