Public Work Days

Chicago River Day - FULL

Saturday, May 11th

Join us for a spring clean-up. We will be removing invasive species and cleaning up around Lake Katherine. This is a fun day so bring your friends. Scout troops and other community groups can use this as an opportunity to participate in community service. Lunch will be provided free to all volunteers. Rain or shine we hope to see you there!

Register online by Sunday, May 5th at Space is limited.

This event is presented by Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens & Friends of the Chicago River.

Opportunities for Current High School Students

These opportunities are for high school students who are looking for service learning hours. If you would like to volunteer for camp or the summer programs, please complete our online form at If you have any questions, or are over 18 but interested in volunteering for one of these programs, please contact Marian at 708-361-1873.

Camp Counselor

Camp counselors help lead groups of children through a variety of outdoor activities. Each camp runs for a full week. Camp counselors volunteer from 9:30am to 2:30pm each day.

Summer Program Volunteer

Volunteers assist children in water-related activities. Read below for descriptions of each program. Two sessions are held each day, from 12:45pm-2:15pm and from 2:45pm-4:15pm. Volunteers may sign up for one or multiple sessions.

Tom Sawyer Style Fishing
Children will try their hand at fishing, catch and release style.

Walking in the Waterfall
We will take children for a walk in the waterfall and investigate the movement of water.

Wetland Wonders
Children will hike the shores of Lake Katherine and collect specimens using water nets. We'll then examine the specimens using magnifying glasses and a dissecting scope.
