Saturday, January 24, 2009 - Winterfest At this exciting festival, observe a demonstration by the Adopt-a-Husky Sled Dog Teams, live wolves from Big Wolf Ranch, and raptors from a local wildlife expert. Enjoy hayrides, nature exhibits, face painting, and candle making. Kids can experience ice bowling, snow painting, crafts, and more. The Teddy Bear Hospital will be returning once again, and kids are encouraged to bring their stuffed animals for some 'medical attention' and tender loving care. The Palos Heights Fire Department will demonstrate an ice rescue. Enjoy treats and beverages sold by Palos Heights Kiwanis and Kernel Sweet Tooth 12pm - 4pm, Saturday January 24, 2009 Adults: $5.00 Children (3-12): $3.00 Proceeds benefit Lake Katherine's education programs, animal care, and habitat restoration. Questions or information: (708) 361-1873 Saturday, April 18, 2009 - Spring Fishing Classic What could be better than fishing, barbecue, competitions, and cash prizes? Local anglers are invited to attend the 2009 Spring Fishing Classic; only 125 tickets are being sold for this fundraising event. Prizes and trophies will be awarded. A noon barbecue and a silent auction for a fishing trip for 5 on a pontoon boat on Lake Katherine will also be held that day. The rules: 1. Only 125 tickets will be sold 2. Two fishing rods are allowed per ticket. 3. Fishing is allowed on the entire shoreline of the lake. 4. No minnows or crayfish are allowed as bait. 5. Participants are allowed to keep 15 bluegill/hybrid sunfish. 6. All crappie may be kept and one catfish per fisherman/woman. 7. All other fish, including bass and muskies, must be released. All other wildlife should remain undisturbed. 7:00am - 12:00 pm, April 18, 2008 Tickets are $100 and are available at Lake Katherine. Saturday, April 25, 2009 - Arbor Day Tree seedlings and planting guides will be given to the first 200 families attending Arbor Day 2009. The fun filled festival includes a display of animal guests; family games; and judging of local schools' poster entries. Visitors can enjoy hayrides, nature exhibits, face painting, and puppet shows. Master Gardens from the University of Illinois Extension will be on hand to answer questions about tree planting and gardening. Food and Beverages will be sold by the Palos Heights Kiwanis and Coffee and Treats will be sold by Ollie’s. Students from Trinity Christian College will be spreading wood chips on trails, mulching gardens, and doing general gardening tasks as part of their "Love Palos" Day. 11:00am - 3:00 pm - April 25, 2009 Admission: free Saturday, June 13, 2009 - Family Fishing Day Fishing, food and fun for the whole family! The annual event is scheduled to coincide with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources “Free Fishing Days." No fishing license is required during this once a year respite. All participants will be included in a free raffle for fun surprises. The Rules: 1.Only 300 tickets will be sold 2. Only one fishing rod is allowed per ticket. 3. Fishing is only allowed on the south side of the lake, and only participants with wristbands are allowed to fish. 4. No minnows or crayfish are allowed as bait. 5. Sunday, September 20, 2009 - Monarch Butterfly Festival Come see a butterfly tent filled with hundreds of native butterflies; enjoy our exhibit of snakes and other reptiles by the Wildlife Discovery Center including a Timber Rattle Snake and Massagua Rattle Snake; and observe both a live insect exhibit and Lake Katherine’s own recently expanded wildlife exhibits. Kids will have the opportunity to make giant bubbles, search for treasure in a haystack, compete in potato sack races, make crafts, and more. Guests will enjoy hayrides, a rock climbing wall, nature exhibits, face painting, and a craft fair featuring local crafters. Food and Beverages will be sold by over a half dozen vendors.
