Lake Katherine Nature Center is partnering with the Palos Heights Beautification Committee to provide businesses, schools, and residents of Palos Heights with oak tree saplings. Oak trees are a keystone species in Illinois, meaning they are extremely important to the functioning of natural ecosystems, and oak tree numbers across the US are in decline. This initiative will increase the number of oak trees in Palos Heights, ensuring the survival of oak trees in the area, as well as increasing the natural beauty of the city.
Qualified Palos Heights applicants will receive a 5-6ft tall white, bur, or red oak for a $50 fee. Qualified Business, school, or other organization applicants will receive a 5-6ft tall white, bur, or red oak for a $100 fee. Trees will be delivered with no extra cost to planting location on Arbor Day, April 26th, 2024 by Lake Katherine staff. Applicants are responsible for planting, but staff will give directions and help as necessary.
Mature oak trees require a significant amount of space, Before submitting an application, assess the area for overhead clearance of at least 100 ft. Trees must be planted at least 20 ft. from a building, and the sight must be well-drained.
